Quote:
"She wanted Mama Dozie to hit her and slap her if that would make Mama Dozie feel better, if it would turn everything she had just told the members of her extended family gathered in this room a lie."
Question:
Is she so stressed that she really thinks there's an incredibly small chance things might go back to normal?
Comment:
Olanna must be under incredible pressure and pain to desperately wish for something impossible. It's not hard to imagine her being near or at a breaking point after seeing her close relatives dead in front of their destroyed house, then having to report it to the rest of your family. She's hoping that she might be lying. Wanting and hoping are different. Wanting is just to desire, but not neccesarily need or desperately crave. Hope is to beleive there is a chance, no matter how big or small, something positive will happen.
Aside from the obvious good and bad, hope and fear are the same. Hope and fear are both expectations for something to happen. The only difference is one is expecting the positive and one is expecting the negative.

Phillips, Barnaby. "Biafra: Thirty years on ". BBC. 2/12/09 http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/596712.stm.
The article I read was mainly about after the war. first it goes over a short review on the war and genocide, then updates on statuses today. The former leader of Biafra, Cheif Emeka Ojukwu was forgiven by the nigerian government, while most veterans on the side of Biafra are now homeless and "line[d] up in their wheelchairs alongside the main roads in Enugu, begging for money from passers-by."
Right now the government says it is desperate to avoid repitition of the events that led up to the war.

"Half of Yellow Sun" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche.
The story takes place during the Nigerian Biafran war. So far, Biafra has become a country but troops have invaded. Ugwu, Odenigbo, Olanna and her small daughter, Baby, are evacuated once the Universiy area they live in is invaded.
The Biafrian Nigerian War lasted from July 6 1967 to January 15 1970. It was a result of economic, racial, religous and cultural tensions in Nigeria. British imperialism played a part in starting the conflicts when they forced people from different backgrounds to live in the same area.
Research Question:
How big of a role did imperialism play in the war?
