The story takes place during the Nigerian Biafran war. So far, Biafra has become a country but troops have invaded. Ugwu, Odenigbo, Olanna and her small daughter, Baby, are evacuated once the Universiy area they live in is invaded.
The Biafrian Nigerian War lasted from July 6 1967 to January 15 1970. It was a result of economic, racial, religous and cultural tensions in Nigeria. British imperialism played a part in starting the conflicts when they forced people from different backgrounds to live in the same area.

ReplyDeleteGreat question to start with. How did imperialism play a role in the way the various characters see themselves? Using the text as a means to understand the historical experience will allow you to connect the two (history and literature) into one research paper.
